Judge Michael R. Key retired in 2024 after more than three decades of service to Troup County and the State of Georgia. Widely respected as a champion for children and families, Judge Key served as the Juvenile Court Judge in Troup County from 1989 to 2024, transitioning from part-time to full-time in 2018. Even in retirement, he continues to assist his successor and remains actively involved in child welfare and juvenile justice reform efforts across the state.

A U.S. Air Force veteran, Judge Key earned his B.S. in General Business from Troy State University at Montgomery, an M.B.A. from Auburn University at Montgomery, and a J.D. from Emory University School of Law. His legal career has been marked by a deep commitment to trauma-informed, rehabilitative approaches to justice for youth and families.

Judge Key held numerous state and national leadership roles, including President of the National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges (NCJFCJ), Chair of the Georgia Commission on Family Violence, Chair of the Georgia Child Support Commission, and President of the Georgia Council of Juvenile Court Judges. He received several honors for his service, including the NCJFCJ President’s Award and the Georgia Supreme Court’s Amicus Curiae Award in recognition of his exemplary leadership and advocacy.

Known for his fair, thoughtful approach and his ability to balance accountability with compassion, Judge Key has mentored countless professionals, led trainings across the country, and helped shape best practices in trauma-responsive juvenile justice. Though retired from the bench, he remains active as a mediator and continues to support efforts that prioritize the safety, stability, and well-being of children and families throughout Georgia.
